Description

Acorus calamus ‘Variegata’ (Marginal Aquatic)

Flat, sword-like leaves striped cream and green add strong vertical accents, textural contrast and colour to pond edges and bog gardens. Acorus calamus ‘Variegata’ spreads by rhizomes, helping to stabilise muddy ground whilst maintaining water quality by absorbing excess nutrients that promote the growth of algae. The blade-like foliage is a favourite landing pad for hawking dragonflies and offers a dense habitat in which pond creatures can hide. Known commonly as ‘Sweet Flag’, the aromatic foliage has a sweet, citrus smell when crushed. In summer, it produces small, arum-like flower heads. Ultimate height: 60cm to 90cm (24- 35in). Ultimate spread: 50cm to 100cm (20-39in).
