Description
Apple ‘Elstar’
‘Elstar’ is a dessert variety, bearing heavy crops of marbled red apples against a yellow ground. The result of a cross between ‘Ingrid Marie’ and ‘Golden Delicious’, ‘Elstar’ combines the very best qualities of both varieties. ‘Elstar’ has the honeyed sweetness and crunchy texture of ‘Golden Delicious’ but balanced by more complex flavour notes and acidity from ‘Ingrid Marie’, whose own parentage contains the famous ‘Cox’s Orange Pippin’. Its excellent qualities have been recognised with an RHS Award of Garden Merit.Pollination Group 3: Self-pollinating, but more successful through cross-pollination with Cox’s Orange, Delcorf, Golden Delicious, James Grieve, Pinova, Santana or Topaz.
