Description
Arbutus unedo ‘Compacta’
Arbutus unedo ‘Compacta’ is a stunning shrub that provides year-round interest as a focal point. When eaten raw, the edible fruits of this shrub have a strong aftertaste, but they can be used to make jams and preserves for a sweeter, guava-like flavour. Arbutus, though robust once old, will benefit from a coating of fleece for winter protection when young. Its velvety, evergreen foliage and peeling, cinnamon-brown bark provide an excellent background for the clusters of little white urn-shaped flowers that bloom in the autumn. The delicate petals give birth to fiery red fruits that don’t fully ripen until the next year when a crop of flowers appears. This elegant, petite cultivar makes an excellent display shrub for a shady spot. Height and spread: 250 cm (98).
