Cherry ‘Morello’
Cherry ‘Morello’ is a sour cherry that is particularly strong. It grows well in northern parts of the UK, producing a bumper crop beginning in late July. This variety is self-fertile and does not need another plant to pollinate it. It also works well as a pollinator for the majority of other varieties. Cherry ‘Morello’ is the most well-known cooking cherry, with very juicy dark red fruits ideal for pies, jams, wine, or cherry brandy. When fresh, the fruits are sharply acidic, but when cooked, they develop a deep, rich cherry flavour. Rootstocks for cherries: Gisella 5 – Semi-dwarf with mature heights of up to 3m (10′). Gisella 6 – Semi-vigorous, growing to a mature height of up to 4m (13′). Colt – Semi-vigorous, growing to a mature height of 5m (16′). Estimated time to cropping once planted: 2 years. Estimated time to best yields: 4 years.
