Common Medlar

Common Medlars are hardy, deciduous and spreading trees that produce sharp tasting fleshy brown fruits in October and November, preceded by pretty 5cm large white blooms, bursting from the tips of branches in May and June. All this above the green leafed foliage that turns gradually into a yellow-brown as autumn arrives. Leave fruits to ripen on the tree until frosts arrive, for the sweetest flavour, or pick and let them ripen indoors. Goes well with port and cheese, making a great addition to cheeseboards for dinner parties and special occasions. Height and spread: 6m (20′). Medlars are self-fertile and therefore do not require a pollination companion. Estimated time to cropping once planted: 2 years. Estimated time to best yields: 4 years.
