Cornus alba ‘Nightfall’, also known as the darkest dogwood, is a versatile shrub that offers year-round appeal with its vibrant foliage and striking winter stems. In spring, the leaves are dark green, gradually deepening to a rich purple before turning nearly black by autumn. The undersides of the leaves have a silvery-grey sheen, creating a stunning contrast against the deep-toned foliage and the plant?s vibrant red stems. In fall, the foliage puts on a spectacular show of autumn hues before it drops, revealing a delicate framework of red stems that continue to stand out through winter. This low-maintenance shrub makes a great backdrop in mixed borders, where its dramatic foliage enhances the colours of surrounding flowers. It is also striking when planted in groups, particularly when reflected in water. With its fast-growing, upright habit, Cornus ‘Nightfall’ is an excellent choice for hedging.
