Eryngium x zabelii ‘Big Blue’

Eryngium x zabelii Big Blue is one of the largest-flowered and most strikingly blue varieties of eryngium, truly living up to its name. In the early summer, low clumps of grey-green, finely divided, and subtly spiny leaves stay compact, offering no clue of the stunning display to come. By August, rigid, steel-blue stems rise from the foliage, branching out into thistle-like flowers that boast a strong architectural form. Each flower features a central cone encircled by a prominent ruff of slender bracts, all in a bold metallic-blue hue that captivates, especially in the soft evening light when the blooms seem to shimmer. The flower heads remain on the plant throughout the winter, adding interest even in the colder months and creating a magical display when dusted with dew or frost. Big Blue is drought-resistant once established and thrives in poor, well-drained soils. It?s an excellent choice for a sunny, dry Mediterranean-style border or gravel garden, where its striking architecture contrasts beautifully with the softer forms of low-growing perennials. The blooms are especially attractive to bees and butterflies. RHS Award of Garden Merit winner. Height: 70cm (28in). Spread: 60cm (24in). As plant size varies with the season, we list by pot size rather than a fixed height and spread. Images are for reference and may differ based on seasonal growth.
