Description
Fothergilla major
This slow-growing shrub, also known as Mountain Witch Alder, has an RHS AGM for its outstanding garden efficiency. From late spring to early summer, this unique deciduous shrub is adorned with fragrant white bottlebrush flowers. Fothergilla major’s broadly rounded leaves are its most prominent feature in autumn when they turn blazing red and orange. Although resilient to light shade, Mountain Witch Alder performs best when grown in full sun, where its colours are most vivid. In acid borders or at the edge of woodland plantings, Fothergilla major prefers a rich and leafy ericaceous soil. Height: 2.5m (8′). Spread: 2m (6′).
