Galanthus woronowii

Galanthus woronowii, a unique snowdrop from the Caucasus and Turkey, is a standout choice for the late winter to early spring garden. Known as the Giant Snowdrop, it offers an eye-catching presence with its larger, bolder foliage and flowers, yet remains a compact plant, reaching just 15cm in height. Unlike the slender, glaucous leaves of the native snowdrop, Galanthus woronowii features broader, glossy green leaves that create a striking contrast with its classic white flowers. Each flower is marked with distinctive green patterns on its inner segments, often resembling a bold sideways C with a flattened top. This snowdrop is not only a delight for collectors but also an easy-to-grow variety, making it suitable for everyday gardeners. It thrives in small groups and brings much-needed interest to the garden in January and February, when few other plants are in bloom. The wide, low-lying leaves, which can grow up to 25cm, remain fresh for a long time after the flowers fade, providing valuable ground cover for early spring perennials. It is perfect for planting in the shade of deciduous trees, or in light shade in raised beds or rock gardens. This snowdrop will naturalize effortlessly, spreading into larger drifts over time. Galanthus woronowii has earned the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Height: 15cm (6in). Spread: 10cm (4in).
