Description

Ilex aquifolium ‘J.C. van Tol’

This holly cultivar has all the great qualities of the native species but is a lot more garden friendly! Ilex aquifolium ‘J.C. van Tol’ is more compact in size than standard holly and is also practically spineless. A self-fertile tree that doesn’t need a pollination partner. In late spring to early summer masses of small white flowers will create a wonderful display, followed by a stunning display of vibrant red berries in autumn and winter. Ilex aquifolium ‘J.C. van Tol’ will gradually form a bushy, pyramidal tree clothed in glossy, deep green foliage with the majority of the leaves smooth-edged and only some that have spines. Excellent as an evergreen specimen tree, hedge or foundation shrub, offering colour and interest all year round as well as providing thick cover that helps filter out wind and noise. This award-winning holly is robust and will cope well in a range of conditions. Particularly useful for encouraging wildlife into the garden, with the blooms attracting plenty of butterflies and insects and the birds using the tree to nest in and eat the berries. Maximum height if left unpruned: 6m (19.6ft). Maximum spread: 4m (13ft).
