Koelreuteria paniculata

Native to Eastern Asia, Koelreuteria paniculata is an exceptional deciduous tree or tall shrub that will provide multiple seasons of interest throughout the year. Commonly known as Pride of India or Golden Rain tree, this slow-growing tree gradually forms a dome-like crown of silver-grey branches and textured bark. These branches bear large, dainty, pinnate leaves measuring up to 40cm long and made up of leaflets with toothed edges. The foliage emerges an eye-catching bronze-pink in spring and in autumn it transforms to fiery shades of yellow and orange to create a striking display. Long panicles measuring 20-40cm in length hold vibrant yellow blooms in July and August which are followed by attractive seed pods that look like paper lanterns. The pods begin green and change to orange and pink as they age. Grow this award-winning tree as a single-stemmed specimen or for an even more spectacular display, grow as a multi-stemmed tree/shrub. It can also be grown in a large pot if shallow-rooted to make a stunning feature in a courtyard or patio. Tolerant of drought once established, Koelreuteria paniculata likes a sunny, sheltered spot with freely draining soil. Also tolerates shallow, chalky soils and urban pollution. Maximum height and spread: 10m (33ft).
