Liquidambar styraciflua
This colourful deciduous tree will rival any maple in terms of its magnificent foliage. The broad, conical habit of Liquidambar styraciflua makes it an excellent specimen for larger gardens. Although Sweet Gum prefers an acid or neutral soil, it is especially effective in difficult chalky locations since it is lime-tolerant if the soil is deep enough. Late spring flowers are followed by clusters of fascinating spiky fruits that are inconspicuous. In the spring, the sweet gum’s palmate leaves develop on corky branches and stay a delightful fresh green colour before becoming fiery colours of red, orange, and purple. Once established, this towering tree requires little maintenance and makes a lovely example as a stand-alone feature or at the edge of woodlands. Height: 25m (80′). Spread: 12m (40′).
