Magnolia virginiana

Originating from the swamps of north-east America, this magnolia was the first of its species to be cultivated in Britain back in 1688. Magnolia virginiana is a small multi-stemmed tree or large shrub that is semi-evergreen in UK locations that have mild winters. Clothed in lush green foliage with eye-catching, silver-blue undersides and taking on bronze hues later in the season before dropping in the coldest months. In late summer, cream-white, bowl-like blooms will flower, exuding a wonderful vanilla-lemon fragrance. Striking red berries with red seeds will follow these flowers in autumn. Magnolia virginiana is one of only a few magnolias that will cope well in limey soils and makes an interesting specimen tree for mild locations, particularly coastal areas. Height and spread: 4-5m (13-16.4ft).
