Description

Parrotia persica

This incredible tree originates from Northern Iran and is favoured for its magnificent autumn foliage and late-winter blooms. Parrotia persica is a close relative of the Witch Hazel (Hamamelis) and will require very little maintenance, happily growing in most soil types. It produces clusters of small, spider-like crimson blooms in February and March. Glossy green foliage will follow the flowers and will change to brilliant shades of purple, orange, red and yellow in autumn. Persian Ironwood is a very hardy tree which, once mature, produces peeling bark that creates an interesting mottled effect which is appreciated most in winter once the branches are leafless. Parrotia persica makes a wonderful addition to a woodland garden or a superb specimen tree in a large garden. Height: 8m (26?). Spread: 10m (33?).
