Traditional herbaceous peonies are not suited to growing in pots, but Peony ‘Athens’ has been specifically developed for successful container growing, flowering prolifically on a much shorter plant. Peony ‘Athens’ forms neat bushy mounds of lush, deeply lobed, dark green leaves. Strong stems remove the need for staking and, unlike traditional varieties where the heavy blooms droop downwards spoiling the display, the flowers of Peony ‘Athens’ are held upright, their pert faces inviting admiration even when planted in low containers. Despite its petite proportions, Peony ‘Athens’ boasts large blooms that are produced in abundance. The semi-double blooms are composed of bright pink, softly crumpled petals held in a bowl around a central golden boss.Herbaceous peonies will last a lifetime in your garden, giving late spring to early summer displays of show-stopping, ruffled blooms each year for the minimum of effort. Plant them in borders or containers, where they will add structure, glamour and rich colour. They also make fabulous cut flowers.
