Prunus yedoensis

Prunus yedoensis is an award-winning variety thought to be one of the most floriferous of all flowering cherries, creating an exceptional display in spring. Prunus yedoensis grows into a medium-sized tree with a spreading crown, producing tiers of graceful branches adorned with a mass of fluffy clouds of white to light pink blooms that glisten against the backdrop of a blue spring sky. Commonly seen lining the streets in Japan, this Yoshino Cherry Tree makes a spectacular specimen tree for a garden lawn. In late March to April, the bare branches are smothered in a profusion of single, cup-like flowers which burst into bloom just before the dark green, serrated leaves emerge. An excellent choice for wildlife gardens where the almond-like fragranced blossom will be adored by a wealth of beneficial pollinating insects. Small black berries will follow the blooms and are adored by birds. In autumn, the foliage transforms to fiery shades of red and orange, providing a second season of interest. Height and spread: 5m (16.4ft) in 20 years. Ultimate Height: 12m (39ft). Ultimate Spread: 8m (26ft).
