Description
Salvia sclarea var. turkestanica ‘Alba’
Salvia sclarea var. turkestanica is a striking perennial or biennial known for its long-lasting blooms and ability to thrive in a variety of well-drained soils, especially those that are dry and poor. The plant forms low, mounded clusters of textured, hairy leaves, which are topped with upright stems bearing bold spikes of white flowers, accented with rose to blue-tinted bracts. Both the flowers and bracts have a papery texture, allowing them to endure for an extended period, with flowering often continuing from spring through summer and well into autumn. A unique pearlescent sheen on the plant causes it to shimmer in the sunlight, adding to its visual appeal. Once established, Salvia sclarea var. turkestanica is highly drought-tolerant and is an excellent addition to sunny gravel gardens or Mediterranean-style borders. Although it may only live for a few years, it self-seeds readily, with some seedlings even blooming in their first year. The plant’s strong aroma also deters pests, including deer, while its vibrant flowers attract pollinators and make exceptional cut flowers. Height: 90 cm (35 in). Spread: 30 cm (12 in).
