Description
Sapium japonicum
Sapium japonicum is a much sought after shrub or small tree, rarely seen in UK gardens. A slow-growing variety with a densely branching habit, cloaked in deep green, oval-shaped leaves that measure 7-16cm in length. In late spring to early summer, discreet flowers emerge followed by three-lobed, hanging seed pods that burst with remarkable force, to spread their seeds. This Japanese Tallow Tree boasts superb autumn colour, when the large leaves change to vibrant shades of red and gold. Ideal for a sheltered position, against a warm south or west-facing wall. Height and spread: 4 m (13 ft).
