Skimmia Japonica ‘Olympic Flame’
Skimmia are sturdy evergreen shrubs favoured for their multiple seasons of interest. Skimmia japonica ?Olympic Flame? produces glossy, leathery, deep green foliage which forms a dense rounded shrub. Pink buds emerge in winter which open in spring to reveal clusters of sweetly scented, cream-pink blooms that are a magnet for pollinating insects. Masses of vibrant red berries will follow the blooms, contrasting beautifully with the dark leaves. Skimmia japonica ?Olympic Flame? is a female variety so will require planting near a male variety such as ‘Rubella’ in order to produce fruit. This reliable shrub requires very little maintenance, thriving in a shady spot in borders or containers, where it will provide year-round colour and interest. Maximum height and spread: 90cm (35in).
