Sparganium erectum (Marginal Aquatic)

This fast growing native produces vertical, narrow, strap-like foliage on tall stems. Throughout summer the spherical, brown flowers are borne along stiffly upright stems, becoming fascinating spiky round fruits later in the season. Sparganium erectum is easily uprooted and prefers still or very slow flowing water. Commonly known as Branched Bur Reed, this hardy semi evergreen perennial is a useful marginal aquatic for natural planting schemes, creating good cover for wildfowl and other wildlife.
