Why not have a hedgerow that not only looks nice but also provides you with delicious Sweet Chestnuts in the late autumn? Castanae sativa will tolerate being clipped to the desired size, and as long as the catkin-flowers aren’t cut off after they appear in summer, you’ll be rewarded with their fruits later in the year. The large oblong leaves grow to be 20cm (8 inches) long ) in length and will quickly form a dense covering that will serve as an effective privacy screen. It’s also great for blending with other nut or fruit bearing hedging plants. Height: 12m (39′). Spread: 8m (26′). Planting distance: 50cm (20 ). (3 plants per metre for a single line hedge).
