Description
Thuja plicata ‘Atrovirens’
Thuja plicata ‘Atrovirens’ is an excellent substitute for Leylandii since it grows slowly but still provides a compact hedge or a stunning stand-alone display tree. This columnar evergreen can grow up to 60cm (2′) per year, and if cultivated as a solitary tree, it can reach 30m (100′) in 40 years! Regular pruning, on the other hand, allows it to be kept at considerably lower heights. The reddish-brown bark of this quickly growing conifer is appealing, and the scented, deep green foliage drapes elegantly in drooping sprays. Height: up to 30m (100′) if left unpruned. Spread: to 9m (30′) if left unpruned.
