Toona sinensis ‘Flamingo’
Toona sinensis ‘Flamingo’ makes a magnificent specimen tree for a large garden. In spring the new foliage emerges flamingo pink, hence the name. The large pinnate leaves form a broad, airy canopy that slowly fades to creamy-yellow and eventually mid-green in summer. Later it becomes golden yellow in autumn before the leaves fall. This unusual, deciduous, suckering tree produces multiple, upright stems that are covered with attractive peeling brown bark. The entire plant is scented, including the clusters of cup-shaped, greenish yellow flowers in July, which attract plenty of insects. The flowers are followed by winged fruit capsules in autumn. Toona enjoys a sheltered position in full sun, where it will produce the best colours. This really is a tree for all seasons, providing year round interest, even in winter when the old bark peels away in long strips. Height: 15m (49′). Spread: 10m (32′).
