Viburnum opulus
The Guelder Rose is a lovely British native that is ideal for casual hedging. It has several seasons of interest, beginning with lovely, flat white blossoms that resemble lace cap hydrangeas in the spring. The attractive foliage is three-lobed and brilliant green, but in the autumn, when the shrub is loaded with bright red translucent berries that birds enjoy, it takes on gorgeous red, yellow, and purple hues. It will grow in both the sun and the shade, but the sun will provide the finest flowering and fruiting results. Viburnum opulus is a good choice for heavy clay soils, which it will happily tolerate. Height: 8m (26′). Spread: 4m (13′). Planting distance: 30?45 cm (12?18). (4 plants per metre for a single line hedge).
