A much-loved Japanese variety which you can enjoy growing at home with ease! Wasabi rhizomes can be grated to add a distinctive fresh, spicy, aromatic flavour to sauces, dressings and fish or meat dishes, as well being a staple for sushi. Finely chop the leaves and stems to make a quick wasabi paste with a milder taste. Clusters of dainty white, fragrant blooms will appear in March to April which are also edible and can be added to salads or fried in tempura batter for a unique Japanese delicacy. Ideal for a damp, shady area that won’t get too hot such as the edge of a pond, as well as growing in a container stood in a saucer of water. Wasabi plants can be harvested from April to October. Hardy to -5C and can be brought under cover or covered with leaves in the winter, when they drop their own. Height and spread: 40cm (16in).
